FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the July 1, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold featured “South Carolina and the Revolutionary War.” Fort Moultrie, Francis Marion, and the South Carolina Revolutionary War battle sites were spotlighted. There was also a quiz about South Carolina Revolutionary War history.

In other news, Jim DeMint won the statewide runoff in the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate, defeating David Beasley. The City of Charleston unveiled a new website and won a Livability award.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the July 2, 2009 edition of the paper, the centerfold featured the upcoming island Fourth of July celebrations.

In top news there was an article about a devastating house fire on Hooper Street in Smythe Park. It was also reported that a community-wide effort would provide “52 weeks of thanks” supporting our local firefighters.

In business news, readers learned that 80 percent of Daniel Island office space was occupied at the time.

In other news, Rep. Jim Merrill wrote an op-ed, entitled “It really doesn’t matter if Mark resigns,” in reference to then Governor Mark Sanford’s love affair and being away from office while in Argentina.

Island Life photos included a social outing sponsored by the Daniel Island Business Association and held at Laura Albert’s Tasteful Options, as well as photos from the Daniel Island Farmers Market.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the July 3, 2014 edition of the paper, an article featured Lowcountry author Mary Alice Monroe and her newly released book “The Summer Wind.” Monroe served as the guest speaker at a special luncheon held at the Daniel Island Club that June to showcase her latest literary offering.

In other news, it was reported that Berkeley County would have a new supervisor in the fall. Voters ousted Dan Davis in favor of Bill Peagler in the Republican Primary run off.

The centerspread was a showcase of the Fourth of July activities scheduled for Daniel Island.

There was also an article about drones and information regarding the regulations to operate the devices.
