DI News History - June 1, 2023

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO – Reptile Education

At a reptile education session, hosted by the City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Department in Barfield Park on Daniel Island, Matt Olson, environmental educator for the department at the time, allowed children taking part in the event to pet creatures such as the milk snake, box turtle and the bearded dragon, which is indigenous to Australia.

The Daniel Island Rotary held an emergency food drive, delivering supplemental food staples for 50 families in the Wando-Cainhoy-Huger communities.

TEN YEARS AGO – DI resident helped bring message of hope to Uganda

Daniel Island resident Jennifer Roberts, who has worked locally with Operation Christmas Child for many years, was invited to join a team going to Uganda on behalf of OCC. The trip provided Roberts a rare opportunity to open a gift of her own – one that let her see the world through a new set of eyes. Getting the chance to see the recipients of the shoeboxes open their gifts was something she couldn’t wait to experience.

Also in the news was an article from the FEMA Region IV Administer at the time, Major P. May. His article included tips for getting hurricane prepared. He encouraged everyone in hurricane-prone areas to make a pledge to prepare and then act on the pledge and be ready in advance of the hurricane season that officially begins June 1.

Tips included completing your Ready Emergency Preparedness Plan, updating your Emergency Supply Kit, and downloading the FEMA smartphone application to access important safety tips on what to do before, during and after a hurricane.

FIVE YEARS AGO – ‘Meeting Tree’ in danger of being taken town

Plans for Phase 2 of the Clements Ferry Road widening project were announced. While many citizens of the surrounding Clements Ferry Road neighborhoods were excited about the expansion, others were not.

Cainhoy area resident Sammy Sanders was one of the first to speak out against the plans because of the impact on what was colloquially known as the “Meeting Tree.” Upon inspecting the design of the widening project in May of 2017, Sanders saw that the expansion called for the destruction of the tree, which sits on his property. Sanders ultimately lost his battle and the tree was removed because the county decided the alternatives created more adverse impacts to protected wetlands that sit on the other side of Clements Ferry Road, among other reasons.

Toby Smith and Joe Cunningham addressed policy, education, gun safety at a forum at the Daniel Island Marina. The Democratic candidates were hoping to take the First Congressional District away from incumbent Rep. Mark Sanford. Cunningham ultimately won that seat.
