TEN YEARS AGO – Raising technology savvy kids

Kids and technology was the theme of the June 19, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News. At the time, Charleston Police School Resource Officer Dean Fowler had been working at local schools for four years, including his posting at Daniel Island School. He conducted seminars on how to combat cyberbullying to teachers, students and parents but said it is under-reported. Sadly, the damaging effects go unnoticed until something extraordinary occurs such as when a victim commits suicide or responds with a deadly firearm. “When we were young, you could at least get away from it when you got home. Now if a kid is a victim, it’s hard for him to get away from it. These kids usually have their own MySpace page and they check out their friends’ MySpace pages and see other kids picking on them. It’s inherent that they are interested in what other people think about them,” he said. Fowler also said there are dozens of websites dedicated to recognizing and combatting cyberbullies. Here are three that he recommended and are still active today:

• isafe.org

• netsmartz.org

• ikeepsafe.org

Also in the news was information about wild animals. The article stated that development is encroaching more and more into areas that used to be solely animals’ habitats, so it is likely that we will encounter more wild animals crossing “our” property, tempting us to intercede in the animals’ natural life cycles. The best advice is to refrain from the urge to adopt or make contact with these animals.

One tip given was that citizens need to be aware of the risks from caring for a wild animal whether carried home out of concern for the animal, a desire to have an unusual pet or for other reasons.

FIVE YEARS AGO – Daniel Island/Cainhoy high school site in negotiations

The June 20, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News featured an article about the new Berkeley County high school that would be coming to Clements Ferry Road. A potential site for a new school to serve Daniel Island and Cainhoy area students had been selected.

The Berkeley County School Board voted 8-0 at their June 11 board meeting to approve the negotiation of a land purchase with Cainhoy Land, LLC to build the highly anticipated school. The site, part of a larger, 8000 acre tract owned by the family of the late Harry Frank Guggenheim on the Cainhoy Peninsula, is located just south of the Nelliefield Plantation subdivision off Clements Ferry Road. Today, the elementary, middle and high schools are all open and thriving!

Also in the issue were photos of the Daniel Island Kids Fishing Tournament and Yards of the Month.
