TEN YEARS AGO – Color My World photo contest

The theme of the June 5, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News was the “Color My World” photo contest. Readers were asked to submit their photos and to say the talent was great is an understatement! The winning photo was called “Robin Hood’s Bay in England” by Yvonne Michel.

Also in the news was information about upcoming elections. Tim Callanan and Jim Mills were seeking the District 2 Berkeley County Council seat. Callanan ended up winning the election. Also, Berkeley and Charleston Counties were heading to the polls to elect a new 9th Circuit Solicitor. Seeking the top prosecutor post were Scarlett Wilson, the incumbent, and Blair Jennings. Wilson won the election.

In school news, it was announced that Chester Floyd, Berkeley County Superintendent at the time, asked to be released early from his district contract. And in government news, former Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. announced that Josh Martin, director of planning, preservation, and economic innovation, had decided to resign.

FIVE YEARS AGO – Coexisting with alligators

There was an informative article in the June 6, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News about alligators and how to coexist with them on Daniel Island. With the arrival of warmer months on hand, it’s no surprise that Daniel Islanders catch glimpses of alligators in the island’s ponds. With sightings of gators, the Daniel Island Property Association usually gets calls from worrisome residents. Feelings of uneasiness when thinking about or seeing a gator is normal. However, with a bit of basic information and safety tips, coexisting with gators can be pretty easy!

These are the main tips that the Property Owners Association suggested:

1. NEVER feed alligators. Not only is it against the law, it’s dangerous. It trains alligators to associate humans with food, and lessens their natural fear of us.

2. Keep children and pets away from the edge of ponds. Alligators primarily live in fresh water, and you should assume that every pond on Daniel Island will have a gator in it from time to time. While it’s typical to see alligators basking in the sun when the temperature is warm, alligators are spotted in Daniel Island ponds throughout the winter!

3. NEVER swim in any of the ponds on Daniel Island.

4. Keep your distance. Alligators are surprisingly quick.
