TEN YEARS AGO – Former Mayor Riley addresses audience at DINA meeting

In the February 28, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News there was an update on a proposed Daniel Island marina. The proposed four-story marina was expected to include around 370 floating-dock slips, which was slightly less expansive than the neighboring Patriot Point’s Marina, which holds 459 slips. The entire endeavor was expected to take around 18-months to complete, with a projected cost of $20 million. Aside from housing docked boats, the full-service marina was also to include a restaurant, boat ramp, community fishing pier, and a waterfront park, which would serve as the ideal venue for several outdoor activities. Apart from providing island-goers with an outdoor entertainment facility, the waterfront park was to also include up to 20 miles of scenic trails and two miles of waterfront access. The marina was expected to be completed by the summer of 2010. Due to a multitude of factors, the project was never started.

Also in the news was an article detailing the recent Daniel Island Neighborhood Association meeting. Then Mayor Riley spoke to the audience giving an update on city matters. Among the topics addressed were parks, EMS calls, the State Port Authority land on Daniel Island, and increasing traffic noise from I-526. “We build parks based on what the neighborhood and the community wants, as best as we can afford and fund,” Riley told the group. “We thought the park, conceptually, would have a fishing pier, soccer fields, baseball fields, eventually a community center, a gym, dog run, picnic area, and a nice gathering space. But…we will bring the master plan back to you for precise input.”

FIVE YEARS AGO – DIS holds Stand Up Rally to promote anti-bullying

The feature spread in the February 28, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News was about an anti-bullying initiative at Daniel Island School. The school held its second annual Stand Up Rally and Picnic in conjunction with the school’s Community of Caring initiative. Promoting an anti-bully culture where students reassure one another that they’ve “got your back,” the Community of Caring effort was marked with a classroom door decorating contest, accumulation of “kindness links” along the hallways, designated student attire (pajamas, twins, etc.) each day, and the school-wide picnic on that Thursday afternoon. Parents were invited to join their children for lunch on the fields behind the school, and a DJ was on hand to give it a fun party feel. But perhaps most remarkable was the coordination of over 1,300 students into the formation of the letters “DIS” in a colorful show of solidarity and school pride.
