TEN YEARS AGO
In the March 17, 2006 issue, the top news story was that Gov. Sanford came to Daniel Island to announce that the 1,300-acre tract of undeveloped State Ports Authority land on the south end of Daniel Island would be sold for residential development. The authority originally planned to build a large shipping terminal on the property but abandoned the project after fierce opposition from local residents and politicians. Sanford presented a plan that called for the development of the 1,300-acre tract as a “Central Park” with lots of green space. Ten years later and the land remains in SPA ownership.
