FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the May 27, 2004 edition of the paper, stories about island veterans, including profiles of Daniel Park resident, WWII and Korean War veteran Walt Casey, and of Spring Arbor Assisted Living (now Summit Place) resident and WWII veteran Frank Ledbetter were featured.

In top news, it was announced that the Family Circle Tennis Center (FCTC) was selected as the site for the 2004 United States vs. Belarus Davis Cup semifinal, Sept. 24 – 26, 2004.

In other news, 50 members of the island business community mingled atop the roof of Prevacare (now the BB&T building). In addition to taking in the views, they enjoyed talking with other island businesspeople during the monthly “Doing Business with Your Neighbor Happy Hour.”

The Island Life photo page featured neighbors enjoying the pool, including a photo of the first two coaches of the Daniel Island Flying Fish swim team.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the May 28, 2009 edition of the paper, the feature article detailed the State Ports Authority’s history of purchasing, under threat of condemnation, property on St. Thomas Island, as part of its once planned Global Gateway development on the southern tip of Daniel Island. At the time, the original homeowners were seeking to get their properties back.

In other news, the winners of a Bike Helmet Challenge were announced.

In business news it was reported that Vespa and Wasabi would be opening soon and that the Hilton Garden Inn that was planned for Daniel Island had been delayed.

In sports, BE baseball and boys’ and girls’ soccer won state championships, setting a school record with eight state titles in one school year.

The centerfold feature included tips for staying safe in the water and avoiding drowning.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The centerspread in the May 29, 2014 edition of the paper spotlighted Lowcountry beaches. Between Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, Kiawah, and Edisto, there are spectacular beaches in the area to choose from!

Other news included an article about the Charleston Police Department holding a “Town Hall’ meeting on Daniel Island to discuss issues such as traffic and safety. There was also an update from the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association meeting, which included a brief history from former Mayor Joe Riley about Daniel Island.

Greg Peralta’s weekly fishing column included an invitation for islanders to register for the annual Daniel Island Kids’ Fishing Tournament (to be held this year on Saturday, June 15).
