TEN YEARS AGO – Beach Bound: Helpful info about your local beaches

In the May 29, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News, the centerspread featured an article about our local beaches, which included Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, and Kiawah. Information was listed about beach access, parking, beach rules, and even comments from locals.

Also in the issue was a page with photos from a reptile education session hosted by the City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Department in Barfield Park on Daniel Island. Matt Olson, environmental educator for the department at the time, allowed children taking part in the event to pet creatures such as the milk snake, box turtle and the bearded dragon, which is indigenous to Australia.

FIVE YEARS AGO – DI resident helps bring message of hope to Uganda

In the May 30, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News, an article spotlighted Daniel Island resident Jennifer Roberts, who has worked locally with Operation Christmas Child for many years. OCC is an organization that collects over 30,000 shoe boxes between Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester and Colleton Counties for children in need all over the world. Roberts first served as a community relations coordinator for the region and then as the area coordinator for the organization. That April, she was invited to join a team going to Uganda on behalf of OCC. The trip provided Jennifer a rare opportunity to open a gift of her own – one that let her see the world through a new set of eyes. Getting the chance to see the recipients of the shoeboxes open their gifts was something she couldn’t wait to experience. The best part of going on an actual distribution is seeing the kids’ reactions, noted Jennifer. They were “so excited” when the OCC bus drove up each day. Box favorites include soap, washcloths, and stuffed animals.

Also in the news was an article from the FEMA Region IV Administer at the time, Major P. May. His article included tips for getting hurricane prepared. That year, National Hurricane Preparedness Week was May 26 - June 1. He encouraged everyone in hurricane-prone areas to make a pledge to prepare and then act on the pledge and be ready in advance of the hurricane season that officially begins June 1.

“We are asking you to take these simple steps: know and understand your weather risk, take action, and be an example for your family, friends and neighbors,” he said.
