FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Topping the news in the very first issue of The Daniel Island News, October 30, 2003, was an article about fun fall events on the island. Titled “Race For the Cure and Park Day Bring Thousands to the Island,” this article showcased pictures from the popular events. Daniel Island resident Morgan Tate, a 17-year-old Bishop England Senior whose mother died of breast cancer when Tate was 9 years old, earned the overall female winner award in the 10th annual Komen Race For the Cure.

There was also an article with responses to questions asked by The Daniel Island News to mayoral candidates Tom Doyle, Kwadjo Campbell, Jimmy Bailey, Marc Knapp, and Joe Riley.

And in recognition to Breast Cancer Awareness month, Dr. Lucy Davis of Palmetto Primary Care wrote an article with risk factors to watch for and tips on how to prevent breast cancer.

TEN YEARS AGO

Making the news in the October 30, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News were articles about the upcoming elections including, “On your mark, get set, cast your ballots!” and “Ballot Basics: What to expect on Election Day.”

Also, candidates for Senator, Lindsey Graham (Republican incumbent) and Bob Conley (Democrat) answered questions asked by The Daniel Island News about their platforms for the upcoming election.

In honor of the paper’s five year anniversary, publisher Sue Detar wrote an article called “The Daniel Island News celebrates 5 years of publication” with highlights from the first issue printed.

And while the country was facing a downturn in the economy, “Penny Pincher” writer Penny Heater wrote an article titled “It is possible to save during tough times.”

Pictures in Island Life included Oktoberfest and Race for the Cure.

FIVE YEARS AGO

Headlines in the October 31, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News included:

“BCSD to honor original facility agreement at DIS”

“Annexation petition to move forward, despite school announcement”

“The Daniel Island News turns 10, reminisces about the first edition of the paper”

“It’s time to revisit the island’s dog leash laws and other dog etiquette”

In school news, there was an article on State Treasurer Curtis Loftis’ visit to the Daniel Island School. As part of a “Financial Literacy Tour,” Loftis stopped in at DIS to talk about the importance of saving money, while encouraging kids to start good habits now that will lead to success later on as adults.

The feature article was a collage of pictures from the Pumpkin Walk.
