TEN YEARS AGO – A look behind the scenes of the Daniel Island Property Association

The November 15, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News featured an article about the role of the Daniel Island Property Association (POA) and its mission. Jimmy Bailey, former vice president of community services for the Daniel Island POA, said about his day to day job, “I would say 50 percent of our day in this office is planned in advance, the other 50 percent is reacting to what has happened somewhere on the island.” For example, that year a resident called in to report that a “monkey” was running down Seven Farms Drive (it turned out to be a fox squirrel) and on another day there was a report of a 30-foot python slumbering beneath a neighborhood porch. He said those were the kinds of reports that add spice to daily life at the Daniel Island Property Owners Association.

The organization’s overall mission is to keep Daniel Island running in “greased grooves.”

“Looking after the assets of the associations is job No. 1,” said Bailey, who had served in his role nearly three years at the time. “We’re also charged with helping build community through various social events, outreach, etc. The Daniel Island Community Fund’s activities are very much part of that civic participation and outreach.”

In business news, Envy Salon at 130 River Landing Drive on Daniel Island was set to open. “I’m really confident in the products that we have and in what we can do,” said Dina Bione, the salon’s owner and chief stylist. “Our emphasis is that everyone has an inner beauty and an outer beauty. We’re just here to enhance that with hair and makeup, and we feel they go hand in hand.”

FIVE YEARS AGO – Voters vote ‘yes’ to $198 million bond referendum

In the November 15, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News, we reported that voters had approved a $198 million bond referendum for Berkeley County Schools. The district planned to build five new schools with the funding, including two in the Daniel Island area, and renovate 29 other schools across the county.

The referendum passed at the Daniel Island 1 precinct with 72.53 percent of the vote, 69.78 percent at Daniel Island 2, and a remarkable 82.43 percent at the Cainhoy precinct.

“I am not aware of any precinct having higher favorability than the Cainhoy Precinct and it does not surprise me that this community would support public education,” added Amy Kovach, who was then a spokesperson for the Berkeley County School District. “The Cainhoy community is one of our most active, participatory, and supportive neighborhoods because Cainhoy Elementary and Middle School is a gem with fantastic opportunities for children. And, this community very much wants a high school within (a close) proximity so their children are not bussed more than one hour to Hanahan High School or Timberland High School.” Today, the Philip Simmons Schools on Clements Ferry Road are a direct result of that bond referendum.

In school news, students at Daniel Island School celebrated Veterans Day by inviting veterans to share their stories in classrooms.
