Ten Years Ago - Islander elected to school board

In the November 16, 2006 edition of the paper the top news story was the election of Daniel Island resident and Daniel Island Real Estate broker Dan Kingsbury to the Berkeley County School Board. We reported: “The island’s ascendant political clout was confirmed last week when Dan Kingsbury handily captured the Berkeley County School District 2 seat from 16-year incumbent Frances Brewer of Goose Creek.”

In other election results from 2006, which was not a Presidential election year, we reported, “Republicans fared well with Daniel Islanders in statewide races, too, with Gov. Mark Sanford grabbing 75.61 percent of the votes over challenger Tommy Moore… Daniel Island voters also voted yes on ballot amendments, including Amendment No.1, which bans same-sex marriage. Local voters approved that measure by a 64.92 to 35.08 percent margin.”

In other news, builders were dealing with an uptick in construction theft. We reported, “Since January 2006, more than 25 construction-related crimes on Daniel Island have been reported to police. The items stolen include lumber, appliances, heating equipment, copper piping, plumbing fixtures, scaffolding, power tools, and fireplace stones. While Lt. Hill reported that construction theft is ‘not an epidemic’ on Daniel Island, he expected the upcoming holidays would make job sites ripe for the picking. Why now? According to local builders and law enforcement officers, those strapped for cash over the holidays will take whatever they can get and head straight for pawn shops.”

Five Years Ago - Castengera celebrated 15 years at Daniel Island Real Estate

In the November 17, 2011 edition of the paper our centerfold featured Daniel Island Real Estate’s Sally Castengera, who was celebrating 15 years as a DIRE agent. And she is still at it –this year makes 20 years! Five years ago Elizabeth Bush reported, “When Sally Castengera was hired in 1996 to market Daniel Island to potential new residents, she knew it might be a tough sell. With cotton still growing in fields, plentiful wildlife, a myriad of grand oaks, dirt roads, and just one way on and off the island (unless you arrived by boat), Castengera offered the only thing she could at the time – the promise of what was to come.”

In sports, Bishop England was celebrating three state championships – girls’ volleyball, girls’ tennis and boys’ cross-country.
