TEN YEARS AGO – Thanksgiving volunteering opportunities

The theme in the November 22, 2007 issue of The Daniel Island News was the Thanksgiving season and volunteering opportunities. The feature article spotlighted Lowcountry Food Bank, which has been channeling critically needed foodstuffs to poor and hungry families for nearly a quarter-century. The private nonprofit organization collects, inspects, maintains and distributes otherwise wasted food from supermarkets, manufacturers, farmers, food distributors, government and community food drives. Another article featured the East Cooper Meals on Wheels (ECMOW) organization. The ECMOW facility at Mt. Pleasant’s Christ Episcopal Church on Hwy. 17 is a humanitarian hub that provides nutritious home-delivered food to clients who are unable to prepare their own midday meals.

Keeping with the Thanksgiving theme, in health news, Meredith Nelson (of Prime Time Fitness) shared tips to keep the diet on track for the big feast. Her tips included starting the day with some exercise, keeping portion sizes small, not salting food when cooking, eating slowly, and avoiding the temptation to “save” calories for Thanksgiving dinner by limiting calories earlier in the day. You may want to try these tips this year!

FIVE YEARS AGO - World Record attempt to benefit Journey House

An article in the November 22, 2012 issue of The Daniel Island News featured the Daniel Island community’s attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people doing the step-and-slide Cha Cha at the “Cha Cha for Change” event at Blackbaud Stadium (which is now called the MUSC Health Stadium). The event benefited an amazing local organization, The Journey House, which was planned to be built as a place where families could stay while their children were being treated at MUSC.

Also in the news, the new Daniel Island Community Speaker Series invited Rob Fowler, a meteorologist with WCBD-TV, to their first program on November 7, 2012 at the Daniel Island Club.

More than 100 people attended the series debut. It didn’t take long for Fowler’s comments to turn to Hurricane Sandy and all the devastation the super storm caused in New England. Although Charleston and the rest of the Lowcountry were spared yet again that hurricane season, Fowler cautioned that Charleston is never off the hook.

“Each and every year, we roll the dice,” he told the crowd. “…And wonder if we’re ready.”
