FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Sept. 2, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold features revolved around “Working with your Spouse.” Several island spouses were featured, including Lester and Diane Finkelstein (the first owners of Qwik Pack and Ship).

In top news, Hurricane Gaston (originally listed as a tropical storm) uprooted and sheared over 100 island trees. Island Life photos included damage, clean up and kids out and about after the storm.

In high school sports, Bishop England football lost to North Charleston and Hanahan toppled Bluffton.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Sept. 3, 2009 edition of the paper, the centerfold featured the 2nd Annual Daniel Island Harvest Tour of Homes, an annual tradition that continues today. Sponsored by the Friends of the Daniel Island Library, the tour partnered four homes with four different South Carolina authors.

In other top news, the results of a reader survey on hurricane preparedness were published. According to the results, approximately 47 percent of readers had an emergency kit prepared in the event of a hurricane; nearly 40 percent said they did not have a kit; of those who didn’t have a kit, 46 percent reported that they planned to put one together.

In sports news, Hanahan football defeated Cane Bay and Bishop England lost 26-20 to North Charleston.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The centerfold article of the Sept. 4, 2014 edition featured a recent visit from Rep. Mark Sanford to the Daniel Island Exchange Club meeting at Church of the Holy Cross. The First District South Carolina Congressman shared with the audience that he readily admits the federal government is somewhat dysfunctional, but he still believes in the power of the people to elicit change.

Also in the news, a local group of kids and parents got together and created a MineCraft group. The teens met occasionally at Talison Row apartments.

In non-profit news, Max Crosby Construction, a premier Lowcountry custom homebuilder, donated $20,000 to the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the non-profit beneficiary for the 2013 Coastal Living Showhouse on Daniel Island built by the company.

In sports news, Bishop England was defeated by out-of-region Class AAAA West Ashley at home, 14-55. Hanahan also lost, dropping to 0-2, with a 25-14 loss to Timberland.
