DIS and Cane Bay students to compete at National Georgraphic State Bee

Daniel Poch, an 8th grade student at Daniel Island School, and Logan Agnew, an 8th grade student at Cane Bay Middle School, both have qualified for and will compete in the National Geographic State Bee in Columbia. The State Bee will be on Friday, April 1 at the Brookland Baptist Church Resource Center, Banquet and Conference Center, located at 1066 Sunset Blvd., West Columbia, SC.

Each fall, schools that wish to participate in the bee apply with the National Geographic Bee. Each participating school receives preliminary school bee question booklets, and a school final question booklet. The preliminary rounds can be held in classrooms, and the final rounds can be school-wide either during or after school. The school champion then must take a qualifying test to be eligible for the State Bee. Both Agnew and Poch became eligible to compete in the State Bee because of their scores on the qualifying test.

The State Bee is an oral competition with each student receiving questions in the practice round and eight preliminary rounds. The students with the top ten scores from the preliminary rounds will advance to the final competition. The final competition consists of a final round and a championship round, the final round being mostly oral. Two of the questions require written answers from students. The final round determines the two finalists who will compete in the championship round, and the two finalists begin the championship round with a clean slate.

The champion from each state is qualified to compete in the National Geographic Bee Championship in Washington, D.C. May 22, 2016, through May 25, 2016.
