DIS Community Crusaders serve up blessings!

The Daniel Island School’s Community Crusaders broke a club record last week when they collected 62 frozen turkeys for needy families in the community to enjoy over Thanksgiving. This the group’s third year as a club and also their third year taking part in the turkey collection drive.

“Our mission is to look outside of ourselves and serve our community,” said Heather Coker, a DIS teacher and co-founder of the club. “What better way to do that than to make sure others will have a turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner…What an amazing experience it has been for our students.”

The weekend of Nov. 11-12, some of the club members and their family members, along with Coker and fellow DIS teacher Maggie Carmain, joined a “Potluck in the Park” event in downtown Charleston to help feed a hot meal to the less fortunate. Club members also distributed hygiene kits they had made. Last weekend, they assisted in packing Christmas boxes for deployed service members.

“Candice Martell and I started this club three years ago with the idea that even children can make a big difference in our world,” added Heather. “We are so blessed on Daniel Island, and we want to share our blessings and learn to look outside of ourselves to help others…These children are so compassionate and giving. I am so thankful to work with an amazing group of students.”
