DIS technology initiative receives $50,000 grant from DI community Fund
On Monday, September 14, Daniel Island Property Owners Association Vice President of Community Services Jane Baker presented a check for $50,000 from the Daniel Island Community Fund to Daniel Island School for its purchase of Dell Chromebooks as part of a comprehensive technology initiative. The DICF had pledged to match funds the school’s PTA raised during its back-to-school campaign, up to the amount awarded. Thus far, the PTA has raised just over $57,000, and is continuing its campaign so that more teachers and students can utilize Chromebooks as an integral part of their learning. Sixth grade social studies teacher Jason McDermott, who is piloting a “flipped classroom” with the devices, reports that in his eight years of teaching, he has never seen his students as engaged and working hard as he has witnessed with the new technology and “student-centered” approach to learning.
