Fishing trip reels in new records!

Several years ago, I stopped guiding so that I could fish more with my family and friends. So on Saturday (when I found myself unexpectedly free), I called my old friend, Donna Crocker. Donna and I have been fishing together for many years. In all that time, the most fish we ever caught (in a single day) was 59 and Donna’s largest Redfish was 31 inches. On Saturday, we set out to break both records.

We launched the skiff into the falling tide. Our plan was to target Trout as the tide fell then switch to Redfish near low tide. Things started out well. At our first spot (a small creek drain), Donna caught a Trout on her first cast (using a Z-Man StreakZ 3.75 on a 3/16th ounce jig). For the hour next, we caught Trout on pretty much every cast. Most of the fish were in the 12-14 inch range but Donna did catch a Trout that exceeded 24 inches. A personal best. When the tide slowed, the hot Trout bite did as well. However, we had already broken our single trip record by releasing 62 fish.

With the quantity record in hand, we shifted our focus to Redfish. After a quick run to a shallow flat directly adjacent to deep water, we searched the shallows for a school of big Redfish. The water clarity was not very good and we kept spooking the fish before seeing (and casting) to them. Rather than continue sight fishing (looking for and casting to a specific fish), we started blind casting the area. At first, all we caught were Trout. Then, a school of large Redfish showed up. The first few Reds that Donna caught were in the 30-inch range. Nice fish but not the personal best fish we were looking for. I was thinking about leaving biting fish to seek out larger ones (I never learn), when Donna set the hook on a big Redfish. On 10-pound class fishing tackle, the fight was a long one. Eventually, a 32+ inch Redfish came to the skiff. Mission accomplished!

Right now, the weather is great and the fishing is even better. So call your family and friends and take them fishing.
