Friends of the Library to sponsor Daniel Island Harvest Tour of Homes

The Friends of the Daniel Island Library will sponsor the Daniel Island Harvest Tour of Homes on Saturday, October 24, 2015. This event, now in its eighth year, is a fundraiser for the Daniel Island Library.

The Friends of the Library is a nonprofit organization of volunteers who work with the Berkeley County Libraries to promote library services and their contribution to our community. Mary Ann Solberg and Vicki Danziger, co-chairs of the annual house tour, describe this event as a real win-win for Daniel Island.

“Our House Tour lets us introduce many residents and visitors to beautiful Island homes and local authors. And we are supporting our wonderful library at the same time,” says Solberg.

Since the Harvest Tour of Homes began in 2008, it has raised over $100,000 for the Daniel Island Library. Proceeds have been used for such items as additional computer workstations, furniture for the library and its much-utilized community meeting room, early literacy and general collection resources, a parking lot book drop, additional shelving, a display case for Island artifacts, and a reading garden. In addition, funds raised through the House Tour made possible the creation of “Book Club Kits” – multiple copies of titles used by the many Daniel Island book clubs. Because of ongoing budget cuts, these purchases would not have been possible without the Tour of Homes.

The Eighth Annual Daniel Island Harvest Home Tour showcases four unique homes; two on the Park side and two on the South side of the Island. One home features a three story staircase and a master suite that runs the length of the home. A second Park home has an infinity pool overlooking the marsh and includes a “secret library”. A beautifully decorated family home on Smythe Lake and a townhome with rooftop porch round out the tour.

As another feature of the event, each home will host a local author who will be signing copies of his/her book. This year’s authors are: Vijaya Bodach, author of the children’s book “Ten Easter Eggs”; Angela Williams, whose “Hush Now, Baby” tells the story of race, love, and loyalty in the Deep South during the 1960s; Robert F. Moss, a culinary historian and frequent contributor to many publications, author of “Barbeque Lover’s The Carolinas”; and Daniel Island’s own Ben Pogue, author of “In the Shadow of the Songbird”, set in antebellum Charleston. The authors will sell and sign their books and will be on hand to lend a “literary” feel to the tour.

The homes will be open from 1-4 p.m. and may be visited in any order. A map to the homes is provided in the ticket package. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20, payable by cash or check, at these locations: Island Expressions and Egan’s Spirits on Daniel Island, and at Zinnia in Mt. Pleasant. Tickets can also be obtained from House Tour Committee members or by check payable to Friends of the D.I. Library to 121 Iron Bottom Lane, Daniel Island, SC 29492. In addition, any remaining tickets will be available the day of the tour for $25 at the Daniel Island Library, 2301 Daniel Island Drive. All proceeds of the Harvest Tour of Homes remain on the Island to enhance the Daniel Island Library and its resources.
