Give top water fishing a try, but don't get hooked!

Fishing this week was much improved. Cooler water temperatures and optimal tides had the trout and redfish feeding aggressively. So, between thunderstorms, I enjoyed a little family fishing fun. My brother, Dave, and son, Elliott, joined me on a trip targeting trout with top water lures. We launched the skiff in the early evening into the last of the falling tide. After a short run, we began fishing along an oyster bar laden shoreline. Baitfish were thick on top of the oyster bars. It was our hope that trout were holding in deeper water adjacent to the oysters and feeding on baitfish that strayed too far from the bar.

Elliott cast a Zara Spook on top of the oyster bar and began a twitch-twitch-pause retrieve. When his lure hit deeper water, it was crushed by a hungry trout. Rather than net Elliott’s fish, Dave and I immediately cast our lures into the same area. Boom! Triple hook up with top water lures.

As we fought the fish, we debated how to take a picture. In the end, we decided the person with the smallest fish was the official picture taker. Elliott’s fish was the smallest. As soon as this was determined, Dave and I began giving Elliott a hard time. We were all enjoying a good laugh when Elliott took the picture.

Our laughter turned to hilarity when my fish flipped out of my hand and the top water lure hooked Dave in the leg as the fish fell. Well, at least Elliott and I were laughing. Thankfully, the hook was easy to remove, and no significant damage was done. Every time I look at the picture (featured here with this article), it still makes me laugh.

If you decide to give top water fishing a try, you may want to smash down the hook barbs with plyers. It makes releasing fish and removing hooks from your fishing partner much easier. My brother highly recommends it!
