HALOS receive donation from DI Community Foundation's Employee Advised Fund

Contribution to support kindship families in tri-county area

A donation of $2,500 was made to HALOS from the Employee Advised Fund of the Daniel Island Community Foundation. The EAF is a charitable initiative funded by voluntary payroll deduction contributions from employees of Daniel Island Real Estate, the DI Development Company, Daniel Island Club and Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association. Employee contributions are matched and an employee-led board directs annual giving of approximately $40,000 to a wide variety of local charities.

HALOS serves kinship families in the tri-county area. When grandparents choose to take in their grandchildren to keep them out of foster care, the family is in crisis. The children have experienced trauma. Moreover, kinship caregivers most often do not have adequate resources to provide food, shelter and clothing for the children they’ve taken in on short notice. HALOS is the first, and continues to be the only, program providing comprehensive support to kinship families.

Nichole Orvin, operations manager of Daniel Island Real Estate explains, “The gift from the Employee Advised Fund will be used to help families with urgent needs this holiday season.” One family who has been helped by the gift needed assistance because grandma couldn’t afford to fix the heating system. The four grandchildren were doubling up with blankets, and in desperation, grandma used the oven to provide heat. Thanks to the EAF gift, HALOS has helped her cover the utility bill and found someone to fix her heat so the children are safe this winter.

In addition to the monetary gift, Daniel Island Real Estate is providing holiday gifts for 100 children through the HALOS holiday drive, which provides gifts to more than 2,600 children with open cases of abuse or neglect in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties as well as to HALOS Kinship Care Families.
