Learn the 'jiggly and wiggly' retrieve

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends. It is also a great time to catch fish. So when I ran into Jack Gardner at the gym, I invited him and his dad (Jason) to go fishing. On the morning of our trip, it was windy and cool.

Subsequently, our ride up the Wando (in my little technical skiff) was a bit sporty. We arrived at the first fishing spot chilly and wet. However, our dedication was rewarded with a solid Trout bite. We were casting Z-Man MinnowZ Houdini lures on quarter ounce jigs into the current and slowly bouncing them along the channel bottom. Initially, I was catching most of the fish. However, when Jack and Jason began using my “jiggle and wiggle” retrieve (a slight shaking of the rod tip as the lure moved along the bottom), everyone caught lots of fish.

The jiggle and wiggle retrieve was so effective, we decided that it needed a name. After much consideration, we settled on the “jiggly wiggly” retrieve. For some unknown reason, we found this name to be hilarious. Whenever one of us would catch a fish, the others would ask what retrieve they were using. The response of “jiggly wiggly” would send all of us into uproarious laughter. As were enjoying a solid bite from Trout and Redfish, we spent a lot of time laughing. We would have caught many more fish if we were not laughing so much.

The best catch when fishing is time with your family and friends. This week, go fishing. You will be thankful you did. Contact Captain Greg Peralta at captgregp@gmail.com or call (843) 224-0099.
