Live shrimp are abundant in the creeks and are great bait

I love pizza (almost as much as I love fishing). So when I fish late and do not have time to cook dinner (which happens a lot), I visit Orlando’s Pizza on Daniel Island. Typically, I call in my order on the ride back to the boat landing and pick up my pizza on the way home. My favorite is the Orlando’s Special! On a recent visit, I struck up a fishing conversation with Brandon Fleskes. He said he liked to fish so I invited him to fish with me on Monday afternoon.

When we launched the skiff, thunderstorms were building off in the distance. Looking at the weather radar, I figured we had a short window to fish. So I decided to stack the odds in our favor and use live shrimp instead of lures. Right now shrimp are thick in the creeks. After one cast of the net, we had more than enough shrimp for bait. We made a short run to a shallow flat (where I had seen a school of Redfish a few days before). Upon our arrival on the flat, we saw a large school of Redfish chasing shrimp. The water was so shallow we could see the backs of the Redfish out of the water. Brandon and I cast live shrimp on lead head jigs well ahead of the school. Then held our collective breath as the Redfish approached. As luck would have it, the school found my shrimp first. Unfortunately for Brandon, they also found my shrimp second, third, fourth and fifth. This would upset many anglers. However, Brandon was happy just to be fishing.

As I released my fifth fish, thunderstorms were looming. I told Brandon that we had time for one last cast. A cold downdraft hit us just as he made a cast to the approaching school. A Redfish inhaled the shrimp soon as it hit the water. Brandon made quick work of the fight. We were able to land, photograph and release the fish before the storm hit us. It was a great way to end the day.
