No big surprises from Daniel Island/Cainhoy voters

Trump wins in six out of seven local precincts

While the national popular vote for President of the United States is just about split down the middle, Daniel Island and Cainhoy area voters were much more decisive in making their selection for Commander in Chief.

As in Presidential elections of the past, the majority of Daniel Island voters cast ballots for the Republican candidate – and this year that was Donald J. Trump. The political newcomer, now President-elect, received 68.11 percent of the vote in the Daniel Island 1 precinct, 52.12 percent in Daniel Island 2, 53.9 percent in Daniel Island 3, and 56.92 percent in Daniel Island 4. The highest number scored on Daniel Island by Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, was 39.72 percent in the Daniel Island 2 precinct.

Trump also won in the Yellow House and Village precincts on the Cainhoy Peninsula. But, as in the 2012 election, voters at the Cainhoy precinct overwhelmingly selected the Democratic candidate, giving Clinton a whopping 80.93 percent of their votes to Trump’s 17.41 percent. In 2012, Barack Obama won the precinct with 77 percent.

Also of interest on Election Day was voter turnout. In Berkeley County overall, turnout was higher – a record 68 percent - than it was four years ago. Some 80,000 ballots were cast this year in the county, compared to about 70,000 in 2012. But on Daniel Island, the turnout numbers were lower this time around. According to results provided on the website www.scvotes.org, turnout on Daniel Island averaged 58 percent, while it was roughly 67 percent in 2012. As for ballots cast versus registered voters, it would appear some 5,000 residents on Daniel Island and the Cainhoy Peninsula did not make it to the polls for this year’s Presidential election. Of the 11,639 registered voters in all seven of the area’s precincts, just over 6,500, or 56 percent, cast ballots.

Overall, Berkeley County Elections and Voter Registration Director Adam Hammons reported no major glitches from an operations standpoint on Election Day.

“Election Day went well,” stated Hammons. “(It was a) busy day, but good. Over 80,000 people voted in Berkeley County, the most ever. Lines were long in the morning but leveled out by lunch and the day as a whole went smooth. No major issues.”
