NEEDTOBREATHE GOLF CLASSIC GENERATES $200K FOR ONEWORLD HEALTH

Stormy skies didn’t dampen spirits at the sixth annual NEEDTOBREATHE Classic held April 23 at the Daniel Island Golf Club in partnership with Commonwealth Cares Foundation. The golf outing, which featured athletes, musicians and pro players, raised more than $200,000 in support of the international nonprofit OneWorld Health.

In 2013, the Commonwealth Cares Foundation partnered with NEEDTOBREATHE on the foundation’s annual charity golf tournament with hopes of creating something special. The focus was on developing an event that not only raised valuable funds but also increased awareness of the mission of OneWorld Health, a nonprofit organization based in Charleston that aims to bring sustainable quality healthcare to developing communities in Central America and Africa.

The partnership resulted in a first-class two-day event that combines the best of golf, music and giving. To date, more than $1.2 million has been raised to start and sustain two NEEDTOBREATHE Medical Centers in Tola and Jinotega, Nicaragua.

Slogging it out on the fairways until heavy rain forced players back to the clubhouse were Gamecocks Sterling Sharpe and Connor Shaw, Clemson Tiger Kevin Youngblood, three-time GRAMMY winner TobyMac, country artist David Nail, friends of the band including John Mark McMillan and Jon McLaughlin, and five-time GRAMMY nominee Hunter Hayes, who performed with breakout country star Devin Dawson.

CAPTAIN GREG PERALTA’S FISHING CLASS BENEFITS LbmF

A number of fishing enthusiasts turned out to take part in an educational session on the sport hosted by Captain Greg Peralta of Daniel Island at Pierce Park Pavilion on April 21. Peralta did not charge a class fee for participation but did encourage those in attendance to make a donation to the Lucy Boyle Memorial Fund, which was set up in 2015 to honor the late daughter of Daniel Island Library Branch Manager Tim Boyle. Through the fund, a collection has been created featuring a variety of STEM- (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related books for both the Daniel Island Library and other locations within the Berkeley County Library System. Peralta’s class raised approximately $475 for the LBMF. For additional information on the fund, visit https://berkeleylibrarysc.org/lb-memorial-fund/.

DI INSHORE FISHING CLUB AND PTA DEDICATE NEW MEMORIAL

Thanks to a donation from the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club, a special new memorial has been established at the Daniel Island School in honor of the late Suzie Twitchell, a member of the club who passed away last year. The DIIFC donated $2500 to the school’s PTA that was used to help purchase new storage units and playground supplies – and will help fund new supplies next year as well. The money was also used to purchase and plant a tree in the Osprey trail in honor of Suzie, whose husband, Dave, daughter, Julie Chalupsky, and family all live on Daniel Island.
