DICF ANNOUNCES HURRICANE RELIEF CAMPAIGN RESULTS

More than $21,500 was collected by community members as part of a Daniel Island-based hurricane relief campaign for victims of Harvey, Maria, and Irma. The Daniel Island Community Fund matched all donations, bringing the total amount raised to $43,086, according to Jane Baker, vice president of community services for the Daniel Island Property Owners Association.

Funds have been distributed to three charitable organizations. The American Red Cross and Team Rubicon each received a check from the Daniel Island Community Foundation for $14,362 for their efforts in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. Feed Texas received a check for $14,362 for their efforts in Texas.

The island campaign included a number of community fundraising initiatives. Daniel Island resident Michelle Walsh’s children, John and Sydney, held a lemonade stand, along with their friends Isabelle Fernandez and Mia Baldwin, to raise money for the effort. The four set up shop at the corner of Ithacaw Creek Street and Lesesne Street on Sept. 2. With the matching funds provided by DICF, the group was able to donate $480 to the hurricane relief campaign.

“We felt it was good to teach them that these are the types of things you do - goodwill gestures for families who are having a hard time, especially from these natural disasters,” said Michelle. “They were really excited to do it…The people of the island were really so generous! The kids felt so good!”

The Daniel Island Community Foundation will be increasing its role in the community in the coming weeks and months, added Baker, and will soon be launching a new initiative to better engage with citizens in supporting their favorite charities.

CHARLESTON BASKET BRIGADE TO FEED 3,500 FAMILIES FOR THANKSGIVING

The Charleston Basket Brigade (CBB), a local Charleston nonprofit celebrating its 10th anniversary, has announced its goal for 2017: to raise $105,000 to feed 3,500 Charleston Tri-County families (approximately 21,000 people) again this year on Thanksgiving.

Community members are invited to volunteer to assemble and deliver meals to families on preset routes. Assembly starts promptly at 7 a.m. on Nov. 21 at the Charleston Area Convention Center (Exhibit Hall C) and deliveries begin shortly after. A complete list of volunteer and donation opportunities are available at www.charlestonbasketbrigade.com.

It only takes $30 to feed a family of six to 10 and every penny raised is utilized to purchase food. Each family receives a box of food to cook an entire Thanksgiving meal including a 10-12 lb. frozen turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, fresh rolls, a pumpkin pie and a personal note.

The CBB was founded in 2008 by close friends Pam Hartley and Michelle Scarafile. What started as a small effort feeding 75 families has grown to serve 3,500 families each year with the help of corporate partners including Carolina One Real Estate, raising money and volunteering for the effort; Lowcountry Grocers Piggly Wiggly, providing discounts on food and logistical donations; Communities In Schools locating families in need; and Momentum Marketing, handling all public relations and marketing outreach, as well as event coordination. In the past nine years, the Charleston Basket Brigade has raised more than $640,000 and fed approximately 128,000 people.
