Peter, pirates, and a pixie: A chat with the director of DIS' upcoming spring musical

Daniel Island School’s drama class is treating the community to a musical adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s classic tale, “Peter Pan.” The show will take place onstage in the school’s multi-purpose room on March 18 and March 19 at 7 p.m., and on March 20 at 3 p.m. Her middle school students are involved in every aspect of the production, from cast auditions to set design and construction to lighting and sound to costumes and makeup. Rehearsals take place not only during regular class time, but after school in the weeks leading up to opening night as well. Ahead of the show’s big premier, we had a chance to get some insider theater scoop from DIS faculty director Lauren Canfield, who has been at the helm of twice-annual productions at the school for five years.

Daniel Island News: Why did you select this particular play for your middle school performers and crew?

Lauren Canfield: I chose “Peter Pan” because of the cross curricular opportunities (literature), and it was the first production I assisted in directing in college. My mentor that directed that production passed away last year and as I was reminiscing about my time working with him, it became apparent that this would be the perfect fit for this year’s musical and the lighthearted students in my program. Some of the design elements mimic that original production as a nod to my late mentor.

DIN: What has most delighted (or challenged!) you about the way the project has come together?

LC: This is the largest cast/crew (over 80 students) I’ve ever worked with, which has been fun and challenging!

DIN: What might surprise audience members who would consider themselves seasoned Pan fans?

LC: Audiences should be prepared to play make believe with us, as Neverland resembles a playground, and should be ready for the “Mary Martin” (1960) stage version of the story rather than the popular Disney version. Buy tickets in advance (and choose your seats!) at http://disdrama.seatyourself.biz. Adult tickets are $10 and student tickets are $5.
