Pizza with police!

Orlando’s Brick Oven Pizza has been around for about 15 years and is a popular family-friendly restaurant on Daniel Island. On Tuesday, May 21, the eatery, the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association, and the City of Charleston Police Department (CPD) teamed up to host an event called “Pizza with Police,” which promoted positive relations between the community and the police department. It also gave people a platform to express any concerns or thoughts they had in a warm and welcome environment.

“For us to do our job effectively, we need to have the community’s involvement and help,” said CPD’s Team 5 Commander Lt. Patrick McLaughlin. “If we're trying to do it all by ourselves, it’s not going to get done, and everybody is happier and safer when we work together.”

By the end of the event, Orlando’s was packed with Daniel Island residents and families, all eating pizza and speaking with the officers.

“The goals of these events are to increase the community’s trust, and get to know your community, and get to know their concerns,” noted Capt. Dustin Thompson, also of Team 5. “We had a great turnout at the Daniel Island event and we encourage all other areas of the city to do the same when we hold these community events.”

Daniel Island resident Alexandra Hindman completed an internship with The Daniel Island News during the month of May. She recently graduated from Crown Leadership Academy in Mount Pleasant and will be attending Winthrop University in the fall.
