Police Blotter - August 22, 2019

The following incidents were taken from City of Charleston Police Department reports within the Team 5 area (Daniel Island and parts of the Cainhoy peninsula) between July 19, 2019 and August 15, 2019.

MOTOR VEHICLE THEFTS

A golf cart was stolen while parked at a restaurant on Island Park Drive on July 21. The owner of the cart was reportedly inside the restaurant eating lunch when it was taken and had the keys in his possession. The cart has not yet been recovered and the case remains under investigation.

Police responded to a theft of a motor vehicle at a residence on Brady Street on July 31. The vehicle, a black Dodge Journey SUV, was parked in the driveway at the time it was taken. It was also unlocked with the keys inside. The SUV has not yet been located.

VANDALISMS

Police were called to a Daniel Island parking garage on River Landing Drive last month in reference to a report of a vandalism. The incident occurred sometime between July 18 and 19. A vehicle parked in the garage apparently suffered some paint damage after a bumper sticker was removed by an unknown person.

A construction site on Captain’s Island Drive was targeted by vandals between August 3 and 7. The suspect(s) spray painted the interior of a house with a variety of phrases and a drawing of male genitalia. Police suspect juveniles and are investigating.

LARCENY

A “porch pirate” struck a home on Fiddler Crab Lane between July 18 and 19, according to police. After being out of town for about 10 days, the owners of the property returned and noticed someone had taken an Amazon package from the front porch. The home is located in a neighborhood off Clements Ferry Road. Police are investigating.

LARCENY BY FALSE PRETENSES

According to police, someone failed to pay a $56 cab fare from James Island to Daniel Island on Aug. 9. The case remains open and no arrests have been made.

THEFTS FROM MOTOR VEHICLE

Several vehicles have been targeted by thieves in recent weeks. In a case reported in the Clements Ferry Road area, someone stole a check from an unlocked vehicle between July 20 and 21.

Between August 5 and 6, three unlocked cars were hit on Daniel Island – one on Bucksley Lane ($1000 worth of tools were taken) and two on Brady Street (cash and clothing stolen). The cases are under investigation.

HIT AND RUN ACCIDENTS

A hit and run was reported to police on July 22, after a driver in a Nissan Altima allegedly rear-ended a car on Clements Ferry Road. The complainant stated that after the collision, the other driver told him he didn’t have insurance and fled the scene.

On Aug. 14, police responded to Palm Cove Drive in reference to a hit and run. The victim stated his vehicle was struck while it was parked in front of a residence by a silver SUV, causing damage to the car. The SUV left the scene without stopping. The case remains under investigation.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD

A Cartwright Street resident reported to police on Aug. 11 that he received an email notification about an Uber ride that he did not take. The victim was charged for the ride on his credit card.

IDENTITY THEFT

A Robert Daniel Drive resident notified police on Aug. 5 that after checking his cell phone bill he noticed that he had been charged for two iPhones and an Apple Watch that he had not purchased. The complainant also reported that someone had opened a credit card in his name as well.
