Police Blotter - February 21, 2019

The following cases were filed with Charleston Police Department Team 5 between January 9 and February 12.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD

An officer met with a victim in the Team 5 office on Jan. 9, in response to a debit card fraud. The victim observed on the day before that almost $3,500 was charged to her card to a business that she has never dealt with.

TRESPASSING

On Jan. 9, officers responded to a downtown Daniel Island apartment complex. The victim claimed that a representative from a furniture company attempted to walk past her when she opened the door for him. The suspect was not aggressive, but entered the residence without permission.

THEFTS/LARCENIES

On Jan. 10, an officer was advised of a past theft in Daniel Island Park, between July 2 and November 15. The complainant stated that an unknown subject took two high-end watches from his bedroom. The victim added that an out-of-state moving company had helped him set up his residence.

At a restaurant on Daniel Island, on Jan. 20, an employee reported for their shift. The employee noticed later that day that medication was stolen from their bag by an unknown party. The victim does not have any suspect information.

On Jan. 21, at a construction site on lower Clements Ferry Road, several pieces of construction equipment were removed, after an unknown subject non-forcibly removed the lock.

On Jan. 18, an officer responded to the intersection of I-526 and Clements Ferry Road over an incident that occurred earlier in the day. The complainant said that his vehicle had scratches and a damaged mirror and gas cap. The license plate had also been stolen. The victim believes that his ex-girlfriend took the item and potentially caused the damage.

Between Jan. 21 and Jan. 31, a trailer was stolen from a Jack Primus Road residence. The item was recovered in West Ashley at the end of the month.

At an apartment complex off Clements Ferry Road, an officer was met by a taxi driver. He stated that a woman did not pay the $70-plus cab fare. The report was filed on Jan. 13.

On the afternoon of Jan. 18, officers were dispatched to a Daniel Island tennis stadium in reference to a theft of tools. The tools were locked by two padlocks and there were no signs of forced entry. The total value of the stolen property was $2,000.

An 18-wheeler chassis was reported missing from a business in the Charleston Regional Parkway area. The chassis was dropped off in May 2018 and was noticed missing in June 2018. It was not reported to CPD until February 10, 2019.

GENERAL INFORMATION

On the morning of Jan. 12, a concerned citizen reported a suspicious white male jogging in her Codner’s Ferry Park neighborhood. She was worried about recent thefts in her area. The man told officers that he lives in the area and he was going to meet his mother.

On Jan. 17, at a Daniel Island school, a school resource officer was contacted by the school administration about a pocket knife found on the ground on campus. A student admitted to bringing the knife from home.

BURGLARIES

At a retail store on lower Clements Ferry Road, at 1 a.m. on Jan. 18, a subject was observed breaking into a business to steal a tool. The offender has been identified and charged.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 4, an offender entered an open garage in the Cochran Park neighborhood on Daniel Island. The burglar entered the vehicle in the garage, rifled through it, then entered the vehicle in the driveway and stole it. Another unlocked vehicle was entered earlier in the evening as well.

FLIM-FLAM

On Jan. 11, a Daniel Island resident received a call from someone claiming to be his granddaughter. She told the victim that she was in jail in Europe and that she needed him to wire money to her via a series of gift cards to pay bond. The victim provided the gift card numbers over the phone to another individual who posed as a police officer. Follow up phone calls demanding more money occurred on Jan. 12. The responding officer met the victim at a downtown Daniel Island apartment complex on Jan. 13.

On Jan. 30, a complainant reported to the Team 5 office in response to a flim-flam. The victim received an email from someone who claimed to be her boss. The offender instructed her to buy several thousand dollars-worth of gift cards, then email photos of the cards to them. The victim used her personal credit card to make the purchase.

IMPERSONATION

On Jan. 14, an officer responded to an individual at a downtown Daniel Island apartment, who stated that they received a bill from a wireless phone company out of state for nearly $200.

On Feb. 5, an officer was alerted to a credit card account being opened in a victim’s name without their consent. The complainant received a bill from a wireless phone company for approximately $300. The officer met the victim at a downtown Daniel Island location.

EMBEZZLEMENT

On Jan. 16, an officer was dispatched to a Daniel Island gas station after an employee was observed on security cameras taking lottery tickets and money from the register. The offender reportedly handed the stolen items to their boyfriend.

FORGERY

An officer responded to a retail store on Daniel Island on Jan. 23 in reference to counterfeit bills. At least two bills were used at this store, but it was subsequently discovered that neighboring stores had dealt with the same problem. Several subjects were arrested and charged.

ANIMAL SERVICE RESPONSE

In reference to a dog bite, officers responded to the Beresford Creek Landing subdivision on Jan. 25. The complainant stated that while she was walking her dog, two large unleashed dogs approached her and started fighting her dog. One of the owners of the attacking dogs attempted to separate them.

DRIVING UNDER INFLUENCE

On the evening of Feb. 7, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Seven Farms Drive and Daniel Island Drive. The officers on scene detected signs of impairment. Field sobriety tests were conducted and one subject was arrested.

VANDALISM

Between Feb. 6 and Feb. 7, a victim stated that the thumb latch on her front door was broken. No items from inside her Edgefield Park residence were stolen.
