Police Blotter - July 25, 2019

The following incidents were taken from City of Charleston Police Department reports within the Team 5 area (Daniel Island and parts of the Cainhoy peninsula) between June 28, 2019 and July 18, 2019.

BICYCLE THEFTS

A juvenile’s bike was taken while parked at the Refuel gas station on July 2, according to police. The report on the incident stated that the juvenile and his mother, who were both in the store at the time, saw a male between the ages of 20 to 25 get on the bike and ride it away from the location. The bike was later recovered.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

A traffic stop on July 16 on Island Park Drive resulted in a ticket and a disorderly conduct citation for a woman acting erratically. According to police, the suspect was pulled over initially for failing to stop at a stop sign while coming out of the Publix shopping center. She then became argumentative and “refused to comply or listen,” stated the officers on scene. Ultimately, she was transported to a local hospital after complaining of medical symptoms.

DUI ARREST

On June 30 at 9:50 p.m. police responded to a location on Island Park Drive after receiving a report of an individual driving erratically. Officers located the driver and conducted a field sobriety test, which the suspect failed. He was then arrested for driving under the influence and transported to a detention center.

FIELD OF HONOR FLAG THEFTS

On July 5, a member of the Daniel Island Exchange Club informed police that several flags from the organization’s Field of Honor display at Smythe Park had been taken. According to JC Dominick of the Exchange Club, a total of 12 flags were taken, but seven were later recovered after being discarded in a nearby neighborhood. No arrests have been made and police are unsure of the motivation behind the crime.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Police were notified on July 1 that a former employee of a business on Fairchild Street had been emailing and posting about individuals that still worked at the location. The employee was put on trespass notice.

HIT AND RUN COLLISION

Police were called to the scene of a hit and run collision at the intersection of Clements Ferry Road and Forest Drive on July 9. The victim was reportedly driving a truck with an attached trailer north on Clements Ferry Road when a silver sedan (possibly a Hyundai) struck the vehicle. The driver of the sedan reportedly became argumentative and drove away from the scene. The case has been assigned to the City of Charleston Traffic and Transportation Department.

INJURED PARTY

Police and EMS were called to a residence on River Landing Drive on June 29 in reference to an injured party. Upon arrival, responders noted a female lying on a bed unresponsive. Narcan was used successfully and the victim was transported to a local hospital. According to police, there was no evidence of legal or illegal medications at the residence.

MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT

A vehicle parked at an apartment complex on River Landing Drive was taken without the owner’s permission on July 11, stated a police report. The complainant told officers the car was parked under the complex. He believes it may have been taken by his girlfriend. The case, reported nine days after the complainant noticed the vehicle missing, remains under investigation.

RECOVERED STOLEN VEHICLE

A vehicle reported stolen in Summerville was discovered by police on Charleston Regional Parkway off Clements Ferry Road on July 12, with both a driver and a passenger inside. Both were arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle.

ROUNDABOUT COLLISION

The first collision at the new roundabout on Seven Farms Drive and Daniel Island Drive occurred on Monday, July 15, just before 7 a.m. According to police, a car hit a truck as it was about to exit the traffic circle. No injuries were reported. “The roundabout did its job (in slowing traffic),” stated Team 5 commander Lt. Patrick McLaughlin. “But people still need to use it correctly.” The Daniel Island Neighborhood Association, the City of Charleston Traffic and Transportation Department, the Charleston Fire Department, and Team 5/CPD will be creating a safety video on the roundabout this week to share with the community.

“This is the first accident we’ve had there,” noted McLaughlin, referencing the recent collision. “And we want to get out ahead of it before we have more.”

SHOPLIFTING

Two cases of beer were stolen from the Circle K convenience store/gas station on Island Park Drive on July 8. According the police report, three individuals (two men and one woman) were involved in the thefts. The case is under investigation.

THEFT FROM BUILDING

Two locked kayaks in a parking garage at an apartment complex on Robert Daniel Drive were stolen on July 11, sometime after midnight. According to police, the lock securing the kayaks was cut. Police report they have good suspects in the case and expect to make an arrest soon.

THEFTS FROM MOTOR VEHICLE

Thefts from unlocked vehicles are continuing on Daniel Island and the Cainhoy peninsula. On July 4, two cars parked in a driveway on Brailsford Street in Daniel Island Park were targeted.

A wallet and some miscellaneous items were taken from one of the vehicles, noted a police report. A home camera system showed individuals going into both cars and leaving the scene. No arrests have been made but the case is under investigation.

On July 17, two vehicles parked at the 305 Seven Farms Apartment complex were entered by a suspect or suspects. In one vehicle, a wallet and several pieces of mail were taken. In another, some prescription medications were removed. Those cases also remain under investigation.

TRESPASSING

A male individual was reportedly trespassing at Pierce Park Pool after the facility had closed one night last week. According to police, the offender jumped the fence and went into the restroom and defecated on the floor. The individual’s father responded to the scene and the situation was resolved to all parties’ satisfaction, stated police. No charges were filed.

VANDALISMS

The restroom at Freedom Park was again targeted by vandals. On July 8, police responded to the location in response to a report of a broken window and graffiti on the walls of the facility. This is the second incident of vandalism at the restroom. In June, a water fountain was torn from the wall.

The glass on a vending machine at Pierce Park Pool was broken out on July 18, sometime between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. According to police, a juvenile has made restitution in this case.

WIRE FRAUD

A woman residing on Seven Farms Drive notified police on July 15 that an online party had stolen money from her. The victim said she had been communicating with another individual on Instagram regarding investments and sent the individual increasing amounts of money on three occasions. Soon the account was closed and the suspect disappeared. All transactions were done online and voluntarily, stated police. The case is under investigation.
