Police Blotter - July 26, 2018

The following cases were taken from City of Charleston Police reports filed with Team 5 on Daniel Island between July 5 and July 20, 2018.

POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL ACCIDENT ON DI

A single vehicle accident near the I-526 exit 24 ramp on Daniel Island last Friday, July 20, claimed the life of 53 year-old Moncks Corner man. The victim has been identified by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office as Ernest Whaley. The wreck took place around 4:25 p.m. and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by Coroner Bill Salisbury. The vehicle ran off the right side of the road at the start of the ramp and struck a tree, stated a press release. Mr. Whaley was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The case remains under investigation.

THEFT FROM MOTOR VEHICLE

On the night of July 5, a man and his family arrived in the Codner’s Ferry Park neighborhood to visit family. He and his group went inside, unsure if they had locked the car. When they returned to the vehicle on the morning of July 6, they found sunglasses and two phone chargers were missing. They reported the incident to the police soon after.

BURGLARY AND THEFT OF MAIL

A Pierce Park neighborhood resident contacted police on the morning of July 8 to alert them to suspicious activity. Two subjects were taking several pieces of mail out of mailboxes and putting them in a truck. Officers conducted a traffic stop in the area and halted the truck for suspicious activity and having its license plate covered by a piece of newspaper. A man and a woman were in the vehicle. Numerous packages were inside the car with different addresses. The officers contacted the owners of some of the mail, and the victims pressed charges for petty larceny against the woman. Burglary charges were later added for a bike that was stolen from one of the mail victims. In total, the couple committed a burglary, theft from a motor vehicle, and larceny.

VANDALISM

At a Daniel Island gas station, in the early morning hours of July 10, an employee noticed a four-inch scratch on his car door. The victim thinks it is a former employee whom he had supervised. It is currently under investigation.

SHOPLIFTING

On July 18, at a Daniel Island gas station, a cashier noticed a customer reaching around the lottery ticket box to steal scratch-offs. The offender claimed that they were looking for car keys. The cashier said that she was calling the police, at which time the suspect exited the store. The case is under investigation.
