Police investigate thefts

City of Charleston Police at Daniel Island-based Team 5 is investigating several thefts that took place on Daniel Island over the last few weeks.

In two of the cases, items were taken from unlocked vehicles parked in the Center Park neighborhood on Viscount Street and Farr Street between October 7 and October 9. Thieves also targeted an open garage and made off with several items. Another theft was reported at a home on Gibbon Street.

“People are looking for crimes of opportunity,” said Lt. James Byrne, Team 5 Commander, stressing the need to keep cars and homes secured. “You have to remember to take adequate preventive measures…Part of maintaining this standard of living is having everybody doing their part to not make this an attractive destination for thieves and other criminals.”

Lt. Byrne also reminded residents that an unlocked car gives would-be thieves access to your garage door opener - and ultimately your home.

“If you leave your vehicle unlocked, you’re essentially leaving your house unlocked.”

Police are working under the belief that the above incidents are related. At this point, Lt. Byrne suspects the culprits may be juveniles in search of open garages that may contain alcoholic beverages, as well as other unlocked property.

According to police, a crime classified as a “theft from a building” took place between October 2 and October 6 at a home in Daniel Island Park during a renovation. Some supplies were reported missing. The owners of the residence were not home at the time.

“There was no sign of forced entry,” stated Lt. Byrne. “It looks like it may have been contractor-related.”

A home under construction in Smythe Park was also hit by thieves, he added. Police received a report of missing materials are investigating.

“Remember to lock it or lose it,” added Lt. Byrne. “…If you feel too safe and you become complacent, it promotes behavior that decreases your security.”

Anyone with information that may help police in investigating any of the above crimes is asked to contact Charleston Police at (843) 743-7200.
