Residents advocate for saving trees

Daniel Island residents Lilly Jones and Kendall Cunningham used a visual display at a City of Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals meeting last week to convey their feelings about the importance of saving neighborhood trees. The pair, both students at Daniel Island School, made posters reflecting their thoughts about a zoning variance request by the Daniel Island Company to remove several grand trees to make way for a planned expansion of the Daniel Island Club’s fitness and tennis court amenities on Island Park Drive.

A few other residents also attended the meeting, including Delahow Street resident Diane Thielfoldt, who lives just across the street from the planned expansion. Thielfoldt is worried about the project’s potential impact on the park she overlooks from her home.

“Concerned?” wrote Thielfoldt in an email to neighbors following the meeting. “We are! The loss of our park substantially changes the character of our neighborhood…Our homes will no longer be located near the green space that we bought when we purchased our home. Our real estate values are threatened.”

Ultimately, the BZA approved the variance request, but, according to Thielfoldt, residents in attendance were encouraged to pursue the matter as a neighborhood. The Daniel Island Company declined to comment on the expansion project.

A separate variance request to the City Board of Zoning Appeals by Daniel Island Apartments LLC for tree removal at a site adjacent to the BB&T building on River Landing Drive was withdrawn.
