Say 'Thanks' to Mayor Joe!

Nothing says “thank you” like a grand bash full of music, food, and fun for the whole family - especially when the guest of honor is one of Charleston’s most beloved citizens. Several individuals and organizations have come together to sponsor a community-wide celebration on Sunday, October 25 in honor of outgoing Mayor Joe Riley, who has served at the city’s helm for four decades. The “Thanks, Joe!” party officially kicks off at 3 p.m. with a plethora of free activities at Brittlebank Park, where guests will have an opportunity to take a selfie with the Mayor and sign “The Book of Joe.” Also on tap are ferris wheel rides, a food truck festival and musical entertainment from the Blue Dogs & Friends, the Mt. Zion AME Choir, the Charleston Police Pipes & Drums, and more. A special “Kids Stage” will feature a number of performers, including WoSe Charleston, The Music Battery Drum Line, break dancing by Daft Concept, and storytelling by Storytree Theatre. The fun moves to Joe Riley Park from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for what organizers have dubbed “a musical extravaganza.” Taking the stage will be Edwin McCain, Brendan James, Seth G., the Mother Emanuel AME Choir, and the Burke High School Marching Band. A fireworks show and a few other surprises are also planned. Tickets for this portion of the event are $5 each. Jane Baker, vice president of community services for the Daniel Island Property Owners Association, encouraged all island residents to take part in the historic festivities. “This event is our opportunity as citizens of Charleston to say thank you to Mayor Riley as he prepares to exit office,” said Baker, who worked with Mayor Riley as a member of the City staff for a number of years before taking her present position. “I hope that Daniel Island residents and business owners will attend ‘Thanks Joe!’ and show their support of and appreciation for Mayor Riley, whose vision and dedication over the last 40 years have been instrumental in making Charleston one of the best cities in America.” For additional information on the celebration, please visit www.thanksjoe.org.
