DANIEL ISLAND SCHOOL ANNOUNCES S.C. JUNIOR SCHOLARS

Forty-five students at Daniel Island School have earned the coveted title of South Carolina Junior Scholar (SCJS). The purpose of the SCJS Identification and Development Program is to identify students with exceptionally high scholastic achievement and intellectual ability and to provide opportunities for these students that will facilitate their intellectual growth, broaden their individual interests, and promote their scholastic achievement.

The SCJS qualification for 8th grade students in 2017-18 is a 550 or higher score on the Evidence Based Reading and Writing section or a 530 or higher score on the Math section of the PSAT/NMSQT. Duke TIP participants who had SAT or ACT scores that met the requirements for recognition at either the Grand Recognition Ceremony or the State Recognition Ceremony during their 7th grade year also qualify to become a 2017-18 S.C. Junior Scholar.

Berkeley County’s Junior Scholars will be recognized in a district-wide award ceremony on May 17 and will receive an Award of Merit from the State Department of Education.

DIS 6TH GRADERS TAKE PART IN RENAISSANCE PROJECT

Monologues from Shakespeare’s Richard III echoed off the walls and historical figures came to life in the 6th grade ELA rooms at Daniel Island School last month. The students participated in an Engaging Creative Minds (ECM) experience with Teralyn Reiter and Andrea Rausch of Storytree Children’s Theatre. ECM provides arts and technology residencies (experiences) in Berkeley County School District. The focus of this opportunity has been creating monologue performances of Shakespeare’s Richard III. Students filled the roles of directors and stage managers, as well as actors.

Storytree Theatre goes to schools all over the area to teach not only Shakespeare but any and all standards-based curriculum using theatre. In addition, they offer professional touring productions that go into schools to work curriculum into interactive productions for students from 1st - 8th grade.

PSHS FOOTBALL PLAYERS ASSIST WITH CEMETERY CLEAN-UP

Members of the Philip Simmons High School Iron Horses football team have demonstrated they can score off the field as well. A group of players traded footballs for rakes and clippers on April 21 when they gathered at the “Old Ruins” Cemetery near the new Oak Bluff subdivision off Clements Ferry Road to give the historic site a good spring cleaning. The cemetery, maintained under the dutiful leadership of nearby Cainhoy area resident MaeRe Skinner, who has relatives buried in the sacred space, has tombstones that date back to the 1700s. The Iron Horses, along with Coach Eric Bendig and other volunteers, cleared overgrown brush, mowed tall grasses, and trimmed tree limbs.

“The Board and I want to give many thanks to Philip Simmons High School Coach Eric Bendig and several members of the ‘Iron Horses’ football team for their amazing clean-up work,” said Skinner. “They were able to excavate several ancient monuments and much of the original brick foundation to the original ‘Dissenters Meeting House’ in Old Cainhoy dating back to the 1690s. Generations of Cainhoy residents and my family have taken the care of this valuable historic resource very seriously and our now grandson and fellow PSHS football players will carry on the torch.”
