Bishops run wild against the Iron Horses with 32-16 victory

The Bishop England High School football team picked up its first victory of the season, a 32-16 win over Philip Simmons High School Friday night at Jack Cantey Stadium on Daniel Island.

But the Bishops probably won’t have a chance to go after victory No. 2 until Sept. 21 when they play rival Hanahan.

The Bishops were scheduled to play Timberland in a non-conference game this weekend, but the game probably won’t be played or will be rescheduled due to weather, BE athletic director Paul Runey said.

Bishop England cancelled school Tuesday because of Hurricane Florence and the mandatory evacuation, and could be closed the rest of the week depending on how the hurricane plays out. High School League rules prohibit schools from practicing when school is cancelled because of the weather.

“There’s a chance we could play Monday, but I can’t imagine that scenario happening because of the missed practices,” Runey said. “I can’t imagine playing a game without practicing for a week. We could have the chance to play Tuesday, but I can’t imagine any coach wanting to play Tuesday and then turn around and play Friday. To me, I think it is a wash. If we hold games Friday, we would be putting fans on the road and you definitely don’t want to put them in danger.”

Runey said the High School League might allow teams to make up this weekend’s games at the end of the regular season, but he doesn’t think the game will happen then, either, since it is a non-conference game.

Friday, the Bishops rediscovered their running game and it was too much for the Iron Horses, who fell to 1-3.

The Bishops struggled on the ground against First Baptist in the season-opener, rushing 28 times for 15 yards. Last week, it was more of the same as the Bishops managed only 31 yards on 23 carries against James Island.

The Bishops ran wild against the Iron Horses with 66 carries for 389 yards. The winners totaled 442 yards in total offense. Eddie Marinaro led the way with 23 attempts for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Michael Long also churned and burned Philip Simmons with 20 carries for 129 yards. Sam Gress also was impressive with 81 yards rushing, including a 25-yard run.

Quarterback Cam Costa completed 6 of 15 passing for 53 yards. His longest completion was 22 yards and went to Sullivan Clair.

The Bishops’ defense was just as impressive as the offense as Philip Simmons managed only three first downs the entire game and only 158 yards in total offense. Philip Simmons accounted for 118 of those yards on two plays.

Solly Bess, who missed two games with nagging injuries, scored on a 65-yard run in the fourth quarter. He finished with 16 carries for 110 yards.

Quarterback Omaro Asby scored on a 53-yard run.

The Bishops built a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 20-0 at halftime.

The Bishops were up 29-0 after three stops, but lost the shutout when the Iron Horses broke off with two long long TDs.
