TEN YEARS AGO - DANIEL ISLAND'S ANNEXATION STORY: MAYOR RILEY'S POLITICAL SAVVY SNAGGED DANIEL ISLAND FOR THE CITY OF CHARLESTON
In the August 10, 2006 edition of the paper our cover and centerfold featured the first Daniel Island annexation story – the story of how Daniel Island was annexed into the City of Charleston. Here’s a brief beginning to the story as it appeared in the paper in 2006:
“The mayor of North Charleston called it ‘underhanded and sneaky,’ the Berkeley County supervisor called it ‘unfair,’ and an attorney for the Guggenheim Foundation even said it was ‘not legal.’ Still, the City of Charleston’s 1991 annexation of Daniel Island, ‘by a roundabout route,’ as a newspaper headline at the time put it, was, after some consideration, sanctioned by all the property owners involved and sustained by the U.S. Justice Department.”
