DI News History - June 23, 2016

TEN YEARS AGO

In the June 22, 2006 edition of the paper our top news story was that Berkeley County Supervisors Jim Rozier, a 16-year incumbent, who had never before faced a runoff election was now facing Dan Davis in a runoff election. He finished first in the June 13 primary with 48 percent of the vote. Davis, a for¬mer Hanahan city administrator, garnered 41 percent of the vote and third-place challenger Bill Fennell drew 11 percent. Fennell pledged his support to Davis for the runoff.

Our top feature was on edible gardens and we featured the edible garden that Chef Ken Vedrinski grew at his island restaurant, Sienna, now occupied by LIDI.

Also, ten years ago this week Maddy Catlin fished with her grandfather in the first kids fishing tournament on Daniel Island. See page 28 of this week’s paper for an update on Maddy’s tenth year at the tournament.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the June 23, 2011 edition of the paper the top news story was that the Daniel Island business that served as the “point of compromise” in a rash of debit/credit card fraud cases had taken steps to shut down the breach, according to an investigator with the Charleston office of the U.S. Secret Service.

Our top feature included a do and don’t list of behaviors for living with alligators. Four good tips worth repeating: Do not feed the gators. Do not swim in the island ponds. Do not go after your golf ball in a water hazard. Do not walk small dogs or other pets near the ponds.
