TEN YEARS AGO - Daniel Island School nears completion

In the June 8, 2006 issue of the Daniel Island News, Walt Jenner of Daniel Island offered shag lessons each week at the Pierce Park Pavilion. A longtime music aficionado, Jenner and his wife, Barbara, became enthralled with the shag, South Carolina’s state dance, when they moved to Daniel Island in 2000. “I’ve had a lifelong interest in music,” said Jenner, 60, a retired special-education administrator and psychologist from Syracuse, N.Y.

In election news, candidates for many offices both democratic and republican, were featured due to the upcoming primary election on June 13.

In other news, with the onset of Hurricane season beginning in June, Beth Tiobbel of Tiobbel Insurance contacted the paper to advise residents that detached garages need a separate flood policy in order to be covered for flood. The policy on the house only goes up to $250,000 and that wouldn’t be enough for a house and the garage in most cases, she said.

In school news, the Daniel Island School was nearing completion which would open that August. Of finishing the project on time, then Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Facilities for Berkeley County Schools, Ken Coffey said, “It’s exciting…we’re moving right along…We are all on schedule. It may be a week or two different from the master schedule, but we have 100 percent confidence we will be in the building when it is time for the kids to come.”

The city considered the flag system idea, but decided not to implement the idea.
