TEN YEARS AGO - Area realtors get pep talk

In the October 23, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News, an article featured an event that took place at the Daniel Island Club geared towards local realtors. At the “East Cooper Growth Forum,” Charleston area realtors were encouraged to find the silver lining in an otherwise gloomy real estate picture. Panelists at the event, sponsored by the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors (CTAR), inspired those in attendance to focus on the positive.

“You guys don’t say a negative word this year about the housing market, become cheerleaders for your association, your state, and your companies…and we will get through this,” said Ralph Wetherall, president-elect of the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors at the time.

In sports news, there was an announcement that islanders would have the opportunity to play in softball pick-up games every weekend. Island residents Merv Epstein and Bobby Kornhauser organized the pick-up session to bring together men and women over the age of 30 for a fun, non-competitive game of softball.

“I have played sports all of my life. I play a lot of basketball and tennis, so I guess I would consider myself to be rather athletic,” said Epstein. “Since Daniel Island is such an active community, I thought that this might be a good way for people to have fun and exercise at the same time.”

FIVE YEARS AGO - Cainhoy Plantation development plan presented

The centerspread article in the October 24, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News spotlighted the new Cainhoy Plantation development planned for the Clements Ferry Road area. According to Scott Parker of Design Works, the firm that was handling the development’s design, the proposed new community would be located on either side of Clements Ferry Road, extending north to the Cooper River and south to the Wando River. Using principles set forth in the City of Charleston’s “Century V” comprehensive plan, the Cainhoy Plantation parcel would focus on creating a mixed-use, diverse community that offers citizens a place to live, work, shop and recreate, added Parker.

Plans called for a “community core” near Clements Ferry Road; large residential areas that feature parks, ponds and connecting trails systems; job centers and light industrial development; and “river villages” at both the Cooper and Wando with dramatic waterfront edges.

“The model for that would be the Old Village in Mount Pleasant,” said Parker, of the riverfront spaces. “It will be a little more dense, houses might be more closer together, and maybe there will be some shops and a restaurant…It really turns that into a gathering place or a center of focus for the larger community.”

Development of the first neighborhood in the development is already underway.

Also in development news, there was an update on the Simmons Park apartment complex. The 269-unit luxury apartment community planned in the heart of the Daniel Island Town Center, would break ground in the fall of 2013. Located at 211 River Landing Drive, between River Landing Drive and Pier View Street, the complex was designed by Charleston-based architects LS3P, developed by Spectrum Properties Residential and Pacolet Milliken Enterprises, Inc., and constructed by Balfour Beatty Construction. The apartment community officially opened to tenants in 2015.
