Early morning gator makes surprise porch visit!

On Friday, August 26, before sunrise, City of Charleston police received a call from a Daniel Island resident who was on his way to work and saw an alligator walking in the roadway on Barfield Street. Fearing an early morning jogger may come face to face with the gator, he called the police.

“The call notes indicate that the complainant, who was in a vehicle, reported that he was following a ten to eleven foot alligator that was walking on the side of the road, through several yards, and finally to the front steps of 1075 Barfield Street,” states Lt. Byrne of the incident report, though a formal report was not made.

Homeowner, Carolyn Holland, woke up to a surprisingly early knock on the door.

“The policeman (Mr. Callahan) came to our back door at approximately 4:30 a.m., identified himself through the window and said not to open the front door, ‘there is an alligator on your front porch.’”

The officers contacted the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, who then called a private wildlife contractor to remove the reptile.
