Five Years Ago – Island Town Café latest DI business to close

In the October 6, 2011 edition of the paper our top news story was the closing of Island Town Café, a popular eatery and meeting place. Owner Linda Hitchcock, who had been in the location on Seven Farms Drive since 2005, announced the eatery’s pending departure earlier in the week with a homemade sign next to the register. The space is now occupied by the expanded Daniel Island Animal Hospital.

In other news, the Berkeley County School District took the lead in a national initiative to pre­vent child sexual abuse. The District was rec­ognized by Charleston-based Dark­ness to Light (D2L) as the first school district in the nation to achieve D2L’s “Partner in Prevention” designation, a nationally-recog­nized standard reached when 100 percent of an organization’s members have completed child sexual abuse prevention training.

 

Ten Years Ago – PGA’s Nationwide Tour coming to Daniel Island

In the October 5, 2006 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold featured the upcoming PGA Nationwide Tour event coming to Daniel Island.

In news, former Mayor Joe Riley served as the guest speaker for the Daniel Island Business Association and addressed the issue of crime in the city, stressing that crime businesses are passed down from family to family and that police do not have enough resources to combat crime.

In our “What I do” column, we featured Missy Baldwin, licensed animal health technician at Daniel Island Animal Hospital.  Moo-na Lisa Gourmet Ice Cream & Coffee, Inc., located in the Publix Shopping Center, celebrated its two-year anniversary.

In sporting news, Bishop England beat Andrews in football for the first time in 40 years by a score of 28 to 24.
