Letter to the Editor - April 28, 2016

Thank you for supporting Charleston Animal Society

Charleston Animal Society has finalized our 2016 Firefighter Calendar project and I want to take a moment to thank the Daniel Island Community Foundation for its support. Park Day was a key component to our success. Not only were we a beneficiary of last year’s event but we also sold 40 calendars and adopted three dogs into forever homes!

In 2013 Charleston Animal Society launched No Kill Charleston – the boldest animal welfare initiative ever undertaken in the Southeast. At its core, the No Kill philosophy is about saving every healthy and treatable animal. We have led the way to making Charleston the first No Kill Community in the Southeast. Many don’t realize we care for more than 90% of our community’s unwanted animals – many of which are seriously injured or gravely ill. Charleston Animal Society would not have become the first No Kill Community in the Southeast without our generous Toby’s Fund sponsors, donors and our Firefighter Calendar.

Each year, over 9,000 abused, neglected or abandoned animals come through our doors. Charleston Animal Society embraces all animals regardless of their condition, age or breed and provides medical and behavior treatment, along with lots of love. As we continue to treat the most difficult cases of animal abuse and neglect there simply are not enough dollars to keep up with the volume of medical needs without our largest fundraiser: our Firefighter Calendar Project. Our Firefighter Calendar allows us to save lives at the capacity that we do and financially sustain our No Kill Community.

Toby was a beautiful Golden Retriever mix who came to Charleston Animal Society years ago suffering from chemical burns over a large portion of his body. Despite his dire condition, our medical team could see the fight in his eyes and proceeded with weeks of intense treatment. He bounced back stronger than ever and was quickly adopted by a new loving family. His story was an inspiration, just like so many of the other animals that now benefit from the fund named in his honor. Toby’s Fund provides the medical care necessary to treat and save injured, abused, neglected and abandoned animals.

We can’t do this without you! Only 25 percent of our budget is government funded. That’s why community support is so important. When you adopt a pet, volunteer, make a donation, attend the Firefighter Calendar Debut Party, the Chili Cook-off or buy a Firefighter Calendar you are helping us do what we do best...save lives!

The Firefighter Calendar Committee is already hard at work preparing for the 2017 Firefighter Calendar. You can show your support today by going to www.charlestonfirefightercalendar.com and voting for the firefighter(s) you want to see in next year’s calendar! Every $10 vote gets us closer to our goal! Vote as often as you like through April 28th at 9 p.m.

On behalf of all the animals who benefit from Toby’s Fund, I thank the Daniel Island Community Foundation and the entire Daniel Island community.
