Constitution Week Proclamation in Charleston!

Mayor John J. Tecklenburg proclaimed September 17 - 23, 2017 as Constitution Week in Charleston. Regents of local chapters of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution were in attendance representing the Eliza Lucas Pinckney Chapter, the Fort Sullivan Chapter, the Rebecca Motte Chapter, and the Susannah Smith Elliott Chapter.

The observance of Constitution Week began in 1955 with a resolution adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The NSDAR petitioned for this resolution in celebration of the United States Constitution. The annual celebration’s goals are threefold: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to inform people that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation of our way of life; and to emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the Constitution.

“The framers created a Constitution that translated into law the ideals upon which our nation was built,” said DAR President General Ann Dillon. “Their vision was so forward thinking that their words still guide us today. No American history education can be complete without a thorough understanding of the impact the Constitution has had on the lives of American citizens past and present.”

Just prior to Constitution Week, the four DAR chapters worked with the National Park Service to support a Naturalization Ceremony on September 15, 2017 at Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, located at 1254 Long Point Rd., Mount Pleasant. The DAR Chapters provide refreshments to our country’s newest citizens at the home place of the only National Park Service property connected to a framer of the U.S. Constitution.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. The NSDAR is a non-profit, non-political service organization with more than 177,000 members in approximate. DAR members are committed to volunteer service having served more than 12.5 million hours in communities throughout the world during the past three years.
