Readers urge drivers, bikers to exercise caution
With the return of students to school I think we need to send out the annual reminder about bikes and traffic.
I almost collided with a biker today which prompted me to send this.
I have witnessed kids on bikes speeding down the sidewalks on Daniel Island Drive, crossing streets (like Pierce, Thrower and Mazo) without a trace of slowing down or looking at cross car traffic (what happened to the rule of getting off the bike at intersections and walking across streets?). And there doesn’t seem to be any courtesy to walkers, i.e. “on your left” or “excuse me” or a bell, to alert the walker of a bicycler coming up behind them.
Please remind all students, parents and drivers the importance of observing rules, being aware and courteous. We are so lucky to live in a neighborhood where kids CAN ride bikes to school.... let’s not ruin it.
