Make plans to take part in 3rd Annual Intergeneration Forum

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” - Benjamin Franklin

The wisdom of Benjamin Franklin never ceases to amaze and inspire me. Of course, discovering electricity isn’t the only energy-producing activity he is credited with on his long list of achievements. In fact, as Mr. Franklin suggests in his thought-provoking quote above, when we engage with each other for the purpose of learning, something pretty exciting happens — maybe even something that can spark a movement of change and better understanding.

Such has been the case with the successfully executed Intergenerational Forum, an annual event sponsored by The Daniel Island News and the Daniel Island Community Fund at which high school students and senior citizens come together to discuss the most pressing issues of the day. But they don’t just present their cases…they listen.

“Here we have the true meeting of the minds,” said IGF Committee Chair Fred Danziger, in his opening comments at last year’s program. “A blending of a senior’s time-tested experience with youthful, out-of-the-box imaginative ideas and enthusiasm on topics that are meaningful to both generations. It’s so vitally important that we have this conversation.”

The 3rd Annual IGF is set to take place on March 6, 2018, at Bishop England High School - and planning is well underway. The official vision for the event is as follows:

“To bring together in a public forum representatives of the younger generation and senior citizens and glean their perspectives on vitally important matters concerning humanity, our country, and the world today. Further, to stimulate, recognize, and respect the opinions of each generation and to learn from them.”
