BE girls and boys fall to Wando

The Battling Bishops had rough games on Saturday against Wando. The girls lost their game 80-54 while the boys lost 58-36. The problems that the teams faced were very different from each other, but did not reflect their seasons at all.

The Lady Bishops struggled to score the entire game. Only one player finished in double figures, Rhetta Moore, who struggled early but turn into a scoring machine down the stretch. She finished with 28 points. Unfortunately, none of her teammates were able to step up and help. Coach Runey said of his team’s offensive drought, “We’re in a scoring slump. We’ve been, most of the time, relying on two players to score… One of them is in a terrible slump.”

The Bishops boys’ team started very well. They led 12-6 after the first quarter and they also were only down by four points going into the final quarter. Suddenly, offensive struggles and frustrations set in during the fourth, and BE was outscored by Wando 24-6 in the final quarter. Coach Grevey felt the struggles actually started in the third. He stated simply, “What it really came down to is I thought we lost our composure a little bit in the third quarter. Things weren’t going right for us offensively for a lot of our guys, and I think the frustration mounted. Also, credit Wando, they played a perfect game, they came out and executed and my hat’s off to them.”

The Bishops and Lady Bishops have started region play, and are both 1-0 after victories on Friday against Garrett. The girls won 73-15 while the boys won 70-53. They played Battery Creek yesterday, the scores as well as the stats for the girls’ game are online at besports.net. They also play away at Whale Branch on Friday and home against Porter Gaud on Saturday.
