BE golf team is state runner-up
The Bishop England boys’ golf team’s streak of three state championships is over. But it took the wind, rain and a once-in-a-lifetime effort to bring the Bishops’ reign to an end.
Waccamaw set a state record with a team score of 581 over the two-day match to defeat Bishop England by 15 strokes at True Blue Golf Club on Pawley’s Island.
Waccamaw’s Patrick Golden had the once-in-a-lifetime effort. He finished 13-under-par at 131, five strokes better than the all-time 36-hole state record. He helped the Warriors to a seven-stroke lead after Day 1.
Bishop England’s Ben Burton finished second overall, shooting a 1-over 145. Burton shot a 74 in the first round but rallied on the second day with four straight birdies to score a 71 on Day 2.
The Bishops’ two-time defending state champ Jamie Wilson followed one stroke behind Burton at 146 to claim third.
Burton and Wilson were among 10 Class AA golfers to earn all-state honors. The two will compete in the North-South all-star matches May 20-22 at Barefoot Golf Resort in Myrtle Beach.
HANAHAN SOFTBALL
The Hanahan Hawks softball team had its season come to an end after losing 4-0 and 5-0 to Hartsville in the Class AAA Lower State Championship Series.
The Hawks beat the two-time defending Lower State champs but ran out of gas.
The Hawks were denied their first trip to the state championship since 2009.
BISHOP ENGLAND BASEBALL
The Bishop England baseball team pushed Aynor to the limit winning the first of two games in the Lower State Championship series, but Aynor took the nightcap 4-1. Aynor went on to win the Class AA state title.
Bishop England forced the nightcap with a 14-6 victory as Edward Bolchoz pitched the win.
Gunnar Finneseth was 3-for-5, while Bolchoz was 2-for-4.
