Bishop England's Leask earns soccer scholarship to The Citadel

Bunting, Coulter, and Jeresaty also sign to play college sports

Logan Leask totally understands the student-athlete concept. The Bishop England soccer player is a senior who is ready for her final go-round on the high school soccer pitch.

And, what a ride it has been for Leask, who earned All-Lowcountry and all-state honors the past two seasons for one of the best teams in the Lowcountry.

Here’s the student part of her profile. She takes all AP classes and makes straight A’s.

“I love math, but even it is hard because the AP classes are hard work,” said Leask, who proved last week that National Signing Day isn’t for football players only. “I strive to succeed.”

Leask signed a scholarship to play soccer for The Citadel, which is the next step in her life. After that, expect Leask to join the U.S. Navy and work aboard a submarine. Leask said she’s been inspired to join the Navy because both of her parents, Lisa and Noah, served in the Navy and told their daughter about their experiences and success.

The scholarship The Citadel offered was the final part of the trifecta Leask was searching for as she takes the next step in life.

“It’s so crazy, but I wanted to attend a military school to further my career, and I wanted to play Division I soccer,” Leask said. “And not only that, I wanted to stay local. It’s great the way things worked out.”

Leask has been on the varsity team since her freshman year and is a two-time captain, which is important to her.

“We have an awesome program, players and coaches,” Leask said. “We get great support. Playing soccer has allowed me to develop my leadership skills. That has helped me develop into the type of player I needed to become. It also helped me as a student. Discipline and leadership are so important today.”

Leask plays goalie for the Bishops. She has posted 19 shutouts the past two seasons, helping the Bishops to the Lower State title game both years.

Leask was one of four Bishops who inked scholarships on National Signing Day. Three of the student-athletes were soccer players.

Joel Bunting signed with USC Upstate. Bunting is a three-time all-state selection. He’s tallied 64 goals and 25 assists in his career, including 27 goals and 10 assists as a junior. He scored 19 goals his freshman season to help the Bishops win a state championship.

South Carolina Battery Academy standout Nolan Coulter signed with Lehigh. Coulter is ranked No. 24 in the South Atlantic Region’s senior class. He started as a freshman for the Bishops’ title team in 2012, scoring six goals with three assists.

The other Bishop who signed was offensive lineman Blake Jeresaty. He signed to play for Wofford. The 6-2, 290-pound center has been a starter since his freshman year when he started four games in helping the Bishops win a state title. This past season Jeresaty was selected to play in the 2015 Touchstone Energy Cooperatives North-South game and was named lineman of the year in Region 6-AA.

Leask was thrilled to take part in the National Signing Day activities.

“I started playing soccer when I was 4,” Leask said. “I started to get interested in the sport when I was 10 or 11. But never in my life, did I expect to get a scholarship.”
