Bishops hold up against Whale Branch, win 26-21 in first region game

The Bishop England Battling Bishops played a solid game against the Whale Branch Warriors on Friday and picked up a 26-21 win. The Bishops rode a great first half as well as fullback/defensive lineman John DeStefano and quarterback Leo Albano to the victory. The Bishops first half was just outstanding. After they failed to score on their first drive, Bishops defensive lineman Karson Mingo dove on a fumble to set BE up with a short field. They capitalized with an Albano touchdown run. On the following BE drive, Albano went to work again, scoring on another touchdown run. Whale Branch’s drive flopped on a bad snap on third down and a great defensive play by Jack Grooms to break up a pass on fourth down. On the ensuing drive, Albano broke off a run of more than fifty yards. John DeStefano pounded the ball into the end zone soon after. The Bishop second half did not match the first half. The Bishops gave up two touchdown drives over the next quarter and a half, almost without ever having the football. The Bishops looked flat until DeStefano broke off a huge 59 yard touchdown run to put the Battling Bishops up 26-21. Whale Branch drove back down the field, but they couldn’t finish as the clock ran out. DeStefano overall had a huge game. He ran for 112 yards on offense and had six tackles on defense. Albano rushed for even more, an astounding 159 yards. Both ran for two touchdowns. On defense, defensive lineman Jaylen Stoney-Patterson, defensive back Jack Grooms and linebacker Danny Kiernan all had 10 or more tackles. But any win is a good win to the Bishops at this point in the season. The Bishops entered into region play this week and are now 1-0. Coach Cantey said, “It’s a big win for us because that was the first team to beat us in a region game in twenty-five games prior to last year (when the Bishops lost to the Warriors 28-6), and so it’s big for us to avenge that loss.” The next game that the Bishops play is at home against Garrett Tech on Friday. It will be the Bishops third straight home game and it is also Homecoming.
